Sheffield United 3-3 Ipswich

At the 10th time of asking, Ipswich were within touching distance of delivering Roy Keane a Championship victory, only for Richard Wright to fluff a simple catch from a corner in stoppage time and allow Chris Morgan to mark Sheffield United's 120th birthday with an equaliser.Keane's basement dwellers looked ripe for another defeat when Darius Henderson gave United an early lead, but a fine goal by Jon Walters and a fortuitous one by Grant Leadbitter put them in front. Gareth McAuley added to the lead before a second goal by Henderson, who sidefooted home with 13 minutes remaining, led to pressure which culminated in Wright's error.A posse of photographers greeted Keane's appearance before kick-off, doubtless increasing his sense of the vultures hovering. He had made four changes from Saturday's 4-0 rout by Newcastle but an Ipswich back line showing three new members soon gift-wrapped a goal for United.Their troubles started with a poor clearance by McAuley, which allowed Ched Evans a shot. McAuley sought to redeem his error by putting his body in the way, only for the ball to balloon into the air. Henderson challenged a hesitant Wright for the bouncing ball and must have been surprised to be allowed a free header from three yards.Ipswich could have folded there and then. Instead they traded blow for blow with United, McAuley's header bringing a reflex save from Mark Bunn before they drew level midway through the first half. Carlos Edwards, a recent Keane signing from his former club Sunderland, left Stephen Quinn on his backside before crossing low for Walters to score with the deftest of flicks. The visitors' bench sprang to their feet. All except their manager, that is, who appeared briefly a few minutes later, hands in pockets, to survey the scene. Keane has taken to remarking lately that "Maybe I just got lucky at Sunderland", yet if he has been feeling hard done by, fortune certainly favoured Ipswich when they scored again. There seemed little danger as Leadbitter, another refugee from Wearside, took aim from outside the area. Bunn clearly thought as much, diving late and allowing the tame shot to slip past him.Keane remarked on Monday that he would have booed himself after the weekend debacle. This time his side came off at half-time to cheers from the Suffolk contingent, who chanted his name, although the Irishman's thoughts would have been focused on a stoppage-time miss by Alan Quinn, the former United midfielder, that would have given Ipswich a 3-1 lead. They were six minutes from victory on their previous visit to South Yorkshire, only for Doncaster to snatch a point. But there were few signs of panic or lack of confidence from Ipswich, and when they brought on another Bramall Lane old boy, Jon Stead, his first act was to power through two challenges before delivering a shot which Bunn, once bitten, plunged sharply to collect.United were a shadow of the side that put Sheffield Wednesday to the sword in their previous home fixture, but Ipswich were increasingly pushed back, and it took a fine save by Wright to prevent Stephen Quinn restoring parity. But when they failed to defend Leadbitter's corner, McAuley, for whom the evening had started so wretchedly, scored with an emphatic header.Henderson, though, soon halved the deficit and in injury time Morgan pounced on Wright's mistake to keep the pressure on Keane, whose side are now bottom of the Championship table.ChampionshipSheffield UnitedIpswich Townguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2009 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds
