La Liga, or Primera Division, is the top level Spanish football professional championship. It was created in 1928, when the only national competition was the Copa del Rey, or King's Cup. The championship is made of 20 clubs, the best known being Real Madrid and FC Barcelona. The Merengues have won La Liga 31 times and the Blaugrana have 19 titles. Atletico Madrid and Athletic Bilbao are far behind with 9 and 8 titles respectively. At the end of the season, the 3 lowest placed teams are relegated to Segunda Division. Real Madrid and FC Barcelona are among the best European clubs. These two clubs add 12 Champions League titles. Other clubs like FC Seville, Villareal or FC Valencia are often at the top of the classification.
